"We don’t feel threatened," said Martine Moe Winsnes, 23, to Aftenposten.no. She is one of four people in Santa Cruz, dispatched by Latin-Amerikagruppenes (LAG), an independent solidarity organization.
But they all have received orders to stay indoors.
The reason is the riots that broke out Sunday in connection with the election held in Bolivia’s wealthiest province, Santa Cruz.
The vote concerned whether the province should get more independence, and according to the polls taken Sunday night, the results show an overwhelming majority for the "yes" side.
Opponents of increased autonomy rushed on those for more independence and at least 20 people were injured in the fighting. TV pictures showed people throwing stones and carrying clubs and other weapons.
"We believe the Norwegians in Santa Cruz are safe indoors," said LAG's coordinater in Bolivia, Diana Fynbo.
