Sonja Haraldsen, pictured here at age 18, grew up in Oslo, the daughter of a clothing retailer. Now she's celebrating her 70th birthday as queen of Norway.

The couple had to wait a long time for then-King Olav to approve their match, because it was considered radical for a royal to marry a commoner. Their engagement was finally announced in March 1968, when Harald was 31 and Sonja 30.
