This is the first public photo of Sonja Haraldsen with Norway's then-Crown Prince Harald (center), taken in Oslo August 28, 1959 when Harald had graduated from the equivalent of officers' training school. She's examining his diploma. They married nine years and one day later.
The couple had to wait a long time for then-King Olav to approve their match, because it was considered radical for a royal to marry a commoner. Their engagement was finally announced in March 1968, when Harald was 31 and Sonja 30.
