Most of the time Dirks is content driving his Hjem-Is van to sell ice cream to expectant children, who come running at the sound of the truck's bells. But sometimes the job scares him.
"The job isn't always pleasant. When the kids come there are others who go completely berserk because I seem to disturb them. It is very sad," Dirks said.
Last Sunday, Dirks, 20, had a frightening encounter. A furious man ran up and tried to tear open the door on the right side of the van, which was locked. Then the man ran in front of the vehicle and around and managed to open the door on the driver's side.
"He pulled me out of the car and tried to hit me, but I managed to dodge the punch. Then he started yelling me and saying it was unheard of driving an ice cream truck and making so much noise," Dirk recalled.
"The man was shouting and screaming and threatened to call the police. I suggested that he get in the car so we could go to the police together, but he didn't like that idea," Dirks said.
After raging for a few minutes, the man left and Dirks could sell his ice cream to the shocked onlookers that remained. Dirks then called police and together they visited the neighbor, who was still angry.
Dirks said that it isn't the first time he has had a run-in with offensive people, and he has regular trouble from other bell-haters, including one who films him every time he drives into the area.
