Politicians have long believed that such a ban would be inconsistent with Norway's economic agreement with the European Union but a new verdict from the Supreme Court in the Netherlands makes it easier to ban cross-border gambling, NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting) reports.

"This is good news for us. All signals from the EU show that this should be a national matter. And if so, the Storting (Norway's parliament) has already passed the necessary measures so it is just a question of execution," said Minister of Culture Valgerd Svarstad Haugland.

Critics of the legislation question the wisdom of regulation that will probably prove impossible to enforce.
