Fires in Vindafjord in Rogaland County and in Kvinnherad and Matre in Hordaland continued to burn Tuesday morning after several days of fire-fighting efforts.

"We've had to limit our efforts to controlling the areas that actually are on fire, and try to prevent the fires from coming near settlements," operations leader Trond Friberg from the Sunnhordland og Haugaland police district told news bureau NTB.

He said that two helicopters and more soldiers from Norway's civil defense were to be added to the fire-fighting efforts on Tuesday.

The fire at Vindafjord spread north and northeast from Gjønuten during the night. Friberg said homes in Gangstø and Tindeland "appear to have been saved," and the flames were around four kilometres from Utbjoa.

Local farmers were hailed for helping the fire-fighting efforts, by putting their own equipment into service as make-shift water wagons and extinguishers.
