The interview has been published in the magazine Mann and in the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.

Gates says that he was not on the flight where journalist Bjørn Benkow claims to have interviewed him.

"Via his personal assistant Bill Gates claims that the interview never took place and that he has not flown on an airliner during the relevant time," communication chief Eirik Lae Solberg at Microsoft Norway told newspaper Dagens Næringsliv.

Journalist Benkow insists that the interview is genuine. Benkow has done high profile interviews with Oprah Winfrey and Tom Cruise, the latter attracting international attention when Cruise stormed out after the journalist argued that Scientology could not cure dyslexia.

Aftonbladet said that they stuck by the journalist and that Microsoft Sweden had not complained. Mann magazine has printed an apology in their August issue, at Microsoft's urging, newspaper Dagbladet reports.

Mann editor Knut Christian Moeng told Dagens Næringsliv that he had not deemed it necessary to check Benkow on the basis of his previous work, and that he had no problem shouldering full responsibility for the incident.
