The story appears in the new official biography of Norway's King, "Harald V", written by former Aftenposten editor Per Egil Hegge.
The incident reportedly is one of the reasons that the future crown couple decided to live together.
"I don't know any more than what the King told me. A group was to kidnap the crown prince to provide leverage to get a friend out of prison," Hegge told Side2.
Security became simpler and more effective when Crown Prince Haakon and Mette-Marit began to live together.
