So far this year nearly 143,000 drivers have been caught by Norway's system of automatic traffic control machines, an increase of 27,000 compared to all of 2005, the Norwegian National Collection Agency (NCA) told radio station P4.

The increase is worth NOK 76 million (USD 12.44 million) and so far speeding has brought in NOK 360 million this year (USD 59 million).

In addition to these funds, fines for not using seat belts or driving while using a mobile phone have also raised money for the government.

Police have handed out 87,630 tickets for these kinds of violations so far this year. Even though this is 2,778 fewer than at the same time last year, a hike in the cost of fines last February means that more money has come in for such violations in 2006.
