Arve Opsahl's son-in-law Erling Riisnæs told news bureau NTB on Monday that Opsahl "passed away peacefully" about 11:30pm. Cause of death was reportedly heart failure.

Opsahl would have turned 86 on May 14. He had been in declining health and was admitted to Diakonhjemmet hospital about two months ago.

Opsahl, known for his comic roles, was most famous in Norway for playing Egon Olsen in the ever-popular string of "Olsen Gang" films, known in Norwegian as "Olsenbanden."

He spent more than 60 years in the acting business, making his film debut in 1941. He also performed as a cabaret artist, starting at Chat Noir in Oslo in 1942.

He was employed by Oslo Nye Teater for 16 years and also took on guest roles at Det Norske Teatret and Trøndelag Teater.

Opsahl continued performing long past standard retirement age, and had a hit TV series in the 1990s, Mot i brøstet.
