In an attempt to increase election participation, the government promised to introduce online voting, hoping that more people will cast their ballots if it can be done from home.

Political advisor Geir Pollestad of the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development told public broadcaster NRK that the government will set aside money for the project in the forthcoming fiscal budget, and that work on how to implement the e-voting will start in January next year.

However, voters will not be able to cast their ballots electronically until the local election in 2011.

"We have to ensure that the ballot is still secret, and that the online voting can be safely implemented," Pollestad said.

Psephologist Bjarne Kristiansen welcomed the new initiative, arguing that as election participation falls, it is increasingly important to think of ways to make it easier for people to vote.
