"There haven't been any serious accidents, but very many small ones," said Sidsel Svarstad of the Gudbrandsdal Police District. "Folks who lost control ended in a ditch, or just got stuck."

Brilliant blue skies and autumn weather on Saturday gave way to fog and rain along the coast, and snow in many innland areas on Sunday. Hedmark and Oppland got their first snowfalls of the season, with large snowflakes settling, for example, on the ground at Elverum for several hours.

Some areas as far south as Hadeland and Søndre Land also were hit with snow. Road crews were sent up to higher elevations in Oppland County to plow and spread gravel on the roads, after as many as 10 centimeters of snow fell at Venabygd, Ringebufjellet, Dovre and Strynefjell.

Snow also closed several mountain passes, causing traffic congestion in Telemark when roads were cordoned off.

"It's not entirely unusual that snow comes in September, if we get cold enough air," said Sofia Vindjusveen of the state Meteorological Institute in Oslo.

More snow was predicted in the mountains of southern Norway on Monday, and also in Trøndelag at elevations over 1,000 meters.
