Current Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, head of the same Labour Party that Brundtland led in her time, supports the proposal, reported newspaper Dagsavisen on Monday.
Friends of the Earth Norway (Norges Naturvernforbund) and the Rainforest Foundation (Regnskogfondet) were driving forces behind Sunday's announcement that Norway will donate NOK 3 billion to help stop the burning and destruction of rainforests worldwide. Norwegian officials said they hope other countries will join the effort, viewed as an efficient way to reduce dangerous emissions into the atmosphere and help stop global warming.
The groups now propose formation of an international rainforest council led by a board that would decide how the funding shall be used.
"We have proposed that Gro join the board," said Lars Haltbrekken, leader of Friends of the Earth Norway. He said the board should be under the auspices of the United Nations. Brundtland, a longtime environmental activist herself and former director of the UN's World Health Organisation, already is a UN adviser on climate issues.
Stoltenberg will meet Brundtland at the UN's climate conference in Bali later this week.
