Two representatives from the group (Fundacion Xochiquetzal, Fundasion Susital) were in Bergen to receive the award from Crown Princess Mette-Marit. She became aware of their work while visiting Nicaragua for UNAIDS last year.

"I met some young girls who reminded me how important it is that we never stop learning more, understanding more, and that long-term engagement is decisive," the crown princess said in her speech.

The girls, she said, told stores of sexual attacks and abuse of power, and about being vulnerable to being infected with HIV, and about finding the strength to carry on with hope.

Their group was founded in 1990 and has carried a string of social projects around Nicaragua. Fundasion Susital intends to use the grant from Kronprinsparets Humanitære Fond to fund micro-loans to 15 young victims of the sex trade, so they can establish their own businesses. The group will also follow up their efforts and offer economic, psycho-social and practical help.
