"I personally support that in that case we should have two referendums - one on whether we should seek membership again, and one on the result of negotiations. The latter is important because this will involve central questions for important segments of our society, perhaps especially primary industries," Bondevik said Thursday.
Bondevik has been involved with the Christian Democrat's political opposition to European membership. Norway has voted down suggestions to join the EEC in 1972 and the EU in 1994.
Bondevik said that he had no new EU viewpoints at the moment, but had no illusions that the landscape in Europe, and the conditions of Norway's economic agreement with the EU, would soon undergo profound changes.
"It is too early to start a real membership debate just now. We will need to know what the real conditions are before we ask the Norwegian people for a new referendum," Bondevik said.
