The case grabbed headlines all over the country, and outraged many. Some viewed it as yet another example of Norway's liberal court system going easy on alleged criminals.

The taxi driver, who came to Norway as a boy from the Middle East in 1990, was initially convicted by a local court that believed the defendant's claim that he had sexually assaulted her. He was sentenced to 60 days in jail and ordered to pay damages to his victim.

An appeals court, however, overturned the jail term, claiming the 22-year-old taxi driver should avoid such punishment because he didn't realize the woman was handicapped.

Prosecutor Marit Bakkevig told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) on Tuesday that she would appeal to Norway's Supreme Court.
