Seven police cars remained in the cordoned area, in addition to armed police. Armed police were also visible on rooftops on nearby buildings.
The heavily armed presence, along with witness reports that there were more than the five or six robbers seen leaving, has raised speculation that some of the thieves may still be in the bank offices.
According to newspaper VG, today's fatality was the first time a Norwegian policeman was killed in action in just over six years. Only seven police officers have been killed on duty in post-war Norway.
