Police in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland began a unified effort, codenamed 'Operation Enea', at 6 am on Tuesday morning, raiding the premises of people suspected of owning or distributing child pornography.

Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reported that 118 were arrested in Sweden. Danish news agency Ritzau said that 43 were charged in Denmark and another 37 in Finland.

The Norwegian effort included every police district in the country and raids were carried out simultaneously on 184 locations, both offices and private homes.

The Norwegian operation was led by Kripos, the National Bureau of Crime Investigation, and superintendent Harald Skjønsfjell emphasized that the totals so far were provisional.

Tromsø police not only confiscated computers and hundreds of CDs and diskettes, but also two digital cameras that they believe may have been used to produce child porn.

"It is too early to say anything about their content but we cannot rule out that something has been produced locally," said superintendent Einar Pedersen, head of crime division in Tromsø.
