Investigators were questioning witnesses, but it's believed the man was the victim of a tragic accident.

An official at the ski resort told Dagbladet's web site that the driver of the grooming machine started it up to get it warm and then apparently stood on one of its belts. He was then dragged under the machine when the belts started rotating.

The grooming machine then lurched out of control and reportedly crashed into several cars parked nearby.

An air ambulance rushed to the scene, but rescue personnel couldn't manage to revive the man.

It's the second fatal accident involving a grooming machine at a Norwegian ski report this year. A young girl was run over by another such machine at Bjorli Skisenter last Easter and a court recently found its driver guilty of negligence.

The Bjorli and Valdres ski resorts are under the same ownership, according to website Hegnar Online.
