Odd Eriksen, a 22-year-old hunter from Koppang, shot the male wolf around 2pm on Saturday. It brought the local portion of the hunt to a close, because there was a quota of three wolves in the area of Stor-Elvdal in Hedmark County.

The hunt goes on south of Stor-Elvdal, in and around the townships of Åmot, Elverum, Løten, Hamar and Ringsaker.

The wolf felled by Eriksen was larger than the two females shot earlier, one of which was from a pack that was supposed to be excluded from the hunt.

Environmentalists and animal protection groups called on Norway's environmental minister, Knut Arild Hareide, to halt the hunt after the second female was mistakenly shot. Hareide refused, maintaining that the hunt was necessary to control the wolf population.

There are now believed to be 22 to 26 wolves left in Norway.
