The victory was Krog's first in the USA, and also the first for individual title for her school, East Carolina University.

The first round on Sunday was played in over 30C (86F) degree heat, and this plus the tension proved too much for Krog on day one.

On the 12th hole Krog hit a shot out of bounds, and after checking and running back, she fainted, the Norwegian Golf Federation reported on its web site.

After consulting with a doctor Lene insisted on continuing, with a wet towel around her head. She finished the day on 74, two over par, and improved her score by two shots on each of the next two rounds to win the event by a stroke.

"I had no idea that I was near winning because I knew that two of the girls were three strokes ahead of me when the round started," Krog told The Daily Reflector.

Krog's 70 was enough to win after leaders Gerina Mendoza and Jennifer Ackerson cracked, with round of 80 and 74 respectively.

Krog's Pirates, which included another Norwegian girl, Heidi Helliesen from Drøbak, won the team event to secure her school a spot in the NCAA East Regional in May.

"It is impossible to describe how much this means. We actually had to win this tournament to get a spot in the regional - and we did," Krog said.
