The dramatic incident occurred following a duel just 20 seconds into the match. Hoftun, age 38, fell to the ground and his legs began to jerk wildly into the air.

The club's doctor called the incident "serious," confirming that Hoftun suffered heart failure, had no pulse and no respiration when medics reached him on the field.

Bodø/Glimt doctor Bernt Inge Embrå was able to revive Hoftun, however, and rushed him to hospital in an ambulance.

Club officials tried to downplay the situation later, and said the former star player for Rosenborg was doing well on Monday.

"I was able to meet him this morning, and he expected a doctor's visit," said Bodø/Glimt information chief Randi Angelsen, adding that it would be decided later in the day how long Hoftun would be at the hospital, Nordlands Sykehus, in Bodø.

Hoftun collided on the field with a teammate and doctors believe he was hit hard by the teammate's knee in the area near his heart.

"He fell back and his head landed in a bad position that caused his tongue to cut off his air passage," Embrå told local newspaper Avisa Nordland.

Shaken teammates got word during the break that Hoftun was recovering. They went on to win the match 2-0.
