The Norwegians were at times out-played, at times ridiculed during the match Wednesday night at Gradski Stadium in Podgorica, Montenegro. Around 10,000 spectators witnessed what experts called one of the worst downturns ever experienced by Norway's national team.
Montenegro's squad beat Norway's by a score of 3-1. Norway's only goal was scored by John Carew, one of the Norwegians' international star players.
Hareide demanded that the stars themselves need to start doing a better job for the national team. Norway had been expected to win, not least since its team contains four players who are employed by some of England's top clubs.
Hareide himself seems secure in his coach's post, even though a loss like Wednesday's could spark calls for his resignation.
"There's no danger of Hareide losing his job," Sondre Kåfjord, president of Norway's soccer association, told Aftenposten. "No danger."
Kåfjord acknowledged that the match against Montenegro was nothing to be proud of. "I had hoped we'd come back, but no, this was simply too bad," he said.
