The Olympic soccer tournament started before the official opening of the Olympics, owing to the large number of games to be played. Norway was drawn against the United States in the first game.
Lene Larsen Kaurin began by heading the ball past the US goalkeeper in the second minute of play. Two minutes later, Melissa Wiik outran the US defense, kicking the ball in front of the keeper into the opposite corner of the goal net.
After a few more attempts at scoring by the Norwegians, the US team gradually improved their game, pressing back their opponents.
No points were scored in the second half of the match, despite several shots at goal.
Before this match, Norway has lost the last ten games against the United States.
