Pakistan's parliament passed unanimously a resolution on Friday condemning cartoons of Islam's prophet that have appeared in European publications.
A coalition of hard-line Islamic parties planned to hold street protests in major cities. The parliament's resolution stated that the cartoons, first published in Denmark and later in Norway as well, have "hurt the faith and feelings of Muslims all over the world."
It added that "this vicious, outrageous and provocative campaign cannot be justified in the name of freedom of expression or the press. Freedom also requires responsibility."
Islamic tradition bars any depiction of the prophet to prevent idolatry.
