The European lawmakers said they witnessed a noticeable regression in the human rights situation in Turkey after years of progress, as enthusiasm for membership in the European Union falls.

The lawmakers ended five days of traveling in Turkey, much of it spent in the restive southeast, during which they said they gathered information about increased incidence of torture, increased militancy and violence by security forces in dealing with the Kurdish population, and repeated violations of the principle of free speech.
